A few months ago I was waiting in line at the cash register at a toy store at Polaris Mall, and noticed this woman in front of me was wearing a handful of colorful rubber band in her hand. I thought she might be wearing rubber bands for some kind of charity, just like when breast cancer supporters wear pink ribbon. Within the next few months I learned the name Silly Bandz and see them being sold everywhere, all in different colors, shapes and themes. A couple weeks ago, I had a play date with my friend and notice her oldest son also has Silly Bandz. So I asked him, “Tell me something. What’s so special about these rubber bands?” His mom said, “Oh my God, it’s the craziest thing right now. All the kids in his classroom have these (he’s in Pre-K) and they even do exchange to one another. It was so popular the school does not allow kids to bring Silly Bandz anymore because it’s too distracting”.
This whole Silly Bandz reminds me of the popularity of Beanie Babies about a decade ago when people (including adults) spent hundreds of dollars collecting them. Nothing is special about Beanie Babies and I still couldn’t understand why people went crazy over it. It also reminds me of the fancy sticker trend that was happening when I was growing up. I remember those stickers came in sheets with different shapes, colors, theme and materials. We even had an album for it and did exchange to one another as well.
Anyway, why o why didn’t I think about these things and possibly make a big buck out of it?

“We even had an album for it and did exchange to one another as well.”
We have the same idea.
I produce silly bands and collect albums for sale now.
It’s so beautiful. I like it very much even that I’m old enough to be a grandmom.. HaHa..
