Restaurant Review: Benihana at Polaris

June 15th, 2010

For my birthday, hubby took me out for a dinner at Benihana Polaris, one of my favorite Japanese restaurants.  We typically go there for lunch, but this time we went out for a dinner.  Did you know if you sign up for the exclusive membership you will get $30 gift certificate on your birthday?  Well, that’s what we did.  Benihana is famous for its Japanese steak, where you have a chef showing off cooking demonstration right in front you.  However, I’m not a big fan of steak… I’m aiming for the sushi.

We got there about an hour before they close, so I thought they were going to rush us.  Instead the service was outstanding.  The server even gave us a sample of Firecracker Shrimp, which is basically two pieces of Shrimp Tempura drizzled with spicy mayonnaise and soy sauce.  It’s to die for!!  Since this was the first time we’d been there at dinner hour, we were having a hard time choosing what to order.  We normally had the lunch box, which has just a little bit of everything.  I wish they had something similar for dinner time for people who aren’t familiar with sushi or just want to try a little bit of everything.  We ended up ordering Veggie Tempura Appetizer, Sushi Combination Deluxe, Spider Roll (Soft shell crab, crab stick meat, green leaf, cucumber, avocado, soybean paper drizzled with spicy mayonnaise and soy sauce - my favorite), and Shrimp Crunchy Roll (Shrimp tempura, avocado, cucumber, crab stick meat, tempura crumbs).  The sushi combination deluxe comes with a bowl of miso soup and salad.  What’s not to love?

It was definitely too much for both of us to digest, but we left with a happy stomach.  Everything is delicious.  The tempura sauce is a little bit thicker than what I’m used to and it’s rather tangy instead of sweet.  Other than that, everything is great.  I really couldn’t complain about the service either.  When we asked for a to go box, I asked the waiter to scrap the sauce around the Spider Roll since I love it so much.  He went back to the kitchen and got me the sauce in a container.  I really love the whole experience so much I decided to write to the company.  I work for a major retailer and we really appreciate our customers feedback, especially when they have what we call a “remarkable experience” with our stores.  So I just want to give back to the company by thanking them for the $30 birthday gift certificate, splendid customer service and wonderful food.
