TV damages children’s brain

April 30th, 2009

My husband was and has always been very strict in letting our son watch tv.  I always got upset because I felt that he’s being too strict.  My argument was we grew up watching tv or movies and we turned to be just fine.  Plus, our son goes to daycare everyday and he only as one hour to watch tv before bedtime.  So I think letting him watch tv for a little bit wouldn’t do any harm….  until this week.

My son has been sick for the past 3 days and missing out daycare.  In the beginning I felt like he didn’t have enough energy to play, so tv would be my only source of entertainment.  Everything was “cute” in the beginning.  He imitated some of the words, named the characters, basically did what he normally wouldn’t do without tv.  I was like… this is good.  He’s actually learning new words from this tv shows.  The more he spent time at home the more tv shows he watched, and soon enough it became an addiction.  Now he couldn’t spend more than an hour of playing without asking to watch tv.  He even constantly woke up in the middle of the night and ask for tv.  I never imagined how addicting tv can be, especially to toddler.  Unfortunately I’m not good enough in finding other activities to keep his mind off of tv, which is why I chose not to become a stay at home mom.  I need him to watch tv so that I can do other stuffs.

I just can’t wait until he can go back to school and life can be back to normal again.  The best education for toddler is by having two way interaction, not just one.  After all we want the best for our children, don’t we?
